The first Christmas is usually when people are around two, but for me it happened when I was six. It was December 24, 2001. I didn’t even know what Christmas was, but little did I know what was going to happen Christmas morning. I had moved from Afghanistan to America for a better life. When I was in Afghanistan we usually celebrated a holiday called Eid. It is similar to Christmas, but also many differences. Eid comes twice a year. At Five O clock the Mullah (priest) sounds and that means that it is time for prayers. All the guys in the household dress up and go to the musk and pray, while the ladies pray at home. Than it is celebration after that. As a family you start going to all of your relative’s houses. It is a ritual for the elders in every house to give money to all the young ones for a present. Usually we went first to my grandparent’s house and the brought us a lot of sweets and tea and would always pay me the most money.
There was one thing that I loved doing, which was to fire firecrackers. I can still remember when my mom bought me a type of crackers that were exactly like matches and you would throw it and wait for it to pop. It made a really loud noise. So we were on the way of going to my grandparent’s house and my mom bought me the same crackers. We knocked on the gate which was before the door and before they can open it, I threw a cracker under the gate. Right when he opened it “boom” sounded the cracker; it made my cousin jump so high that it looked as if he had been hit by lightening. We laughed about that for the rest of that day. We also went to my aunt’s house a she paid me one thousand rupees or twenty dollars which was the most anybody had ever paid me.
It was Christmas morning and I wake up to a snowy day and not knowing that it is even Christmas. The world looked so beautiful and puffy. All of a sudden I hear police cars and see about ten cars coming towards our house. They all parked in front and there was hardly any space left. At first I thought that we might have done something wrong but they all opened their trunks. There were about twenty cops two from each car. They each held about three presents each. They came inside our house and gave us all about five presents each. For some reason they already had our names on it, and I got all the biggest ones.
I opened the first one it was a giant semi with a lot of little cars inside it. All the cars were so nice but my favourite one was the green and black Ferrari. After seeing this present I couldn’t wait to open the rest. The second present I opened was bigger than all of them. At first I was trying to open it nicely but I was too excited so I just ripped it as fast as I can. It was a skate board set. It had many different colours of little skate boards and ramp, bikes, and little guys. I was starting to get even more excited, so I opened another one. It was a box of logos, which I enjoyed a lot at the time. Then they gave me the best present in the world. They took me outside with my eyes closed and there was something that I had never imagined that I would have one of my own of. It was a dark green and black bike. It was just perfect; it was also my favourite colours. I started riding it around in circles until I got dizzy.
My mom called us inside and we had a giant feast. Our house was really packed, but full of joy. We thanked them a lot and ever since I have never had a Christmas like that ever again. That night I think I stayed till morning playing with my toys. I just couldn’t stop. From the celebration of Eid where I made a lot of money and had fun with firecrackers had turned to getting the most presents I had ever seen and having a big feast. That was the changing for a better life for me and my family. Now we celebrate both Christmas and Eid. Together they make the greatest times of my life and a lot of wow moments, to where nothing can get better.
